Question: There is nothing like swimming in the hot summer heat. How can I protect my hair from the damaging effects of chlorine?

Mindee's Answer: Before jumping in the pool always saturate your hair with water from the shower or hose. By doing this you have already absorbed the hair with water so it cannot absorb chlorinated water. You can also spray conditioner on the hair to further protect it. If possible always rinse your hair as you get out of the pool as well!

Question: How can I save my blonde hair this summer?

Michelle's Answer: Instead of getting 100 foils, shift to a few highlights splashed around your face and crown and work with lightening your base with color. This will save the integrity of your hair with the dry heat approaching us! Ask your Dolly for more questions.

Tips with Brushes from Dollies Cheryl & Tracy

Question: How do I choose the right size brush?

Cheryl's Answer: When it comes to round brushes they are not one size fits all. Choose
the right size for the look you want. If you want smooth volume use a round brush that your hair only wraps around once. The longer your hair the bigger the brush. If you want curl through the ends go with a slightly smaller one. For deep waves use a smaller round brush to wrap your hair up then twist it out. Don't forget to ask your Dolly how to get your look at home!

Question: What are the do's and don'ts for combing & brushing my hair?

Tracy's Tips:
Do, use a wide tooth comb or a boar bristle brush.
Don't use a plastic brush. This causes the hair to break easily and promotes static.
Do, comb hair in sections. You should start at the bottom and work your way up.

"How to get side swept fringe"
By Jessica Hejna

Question: My hair style is starting to become a real bore. What can I do to spruce my look up a bit?

Jessica's Answer: One nice way to give your existing cut a new look is side swept fringe. To get that nice side swept fringe...use a fine tooth comb. Blow the direction of the bangs down and side to side till completely dry. Cold shot your bangs in the final direction you want your bangs to lay.

Four Easy Steps to Protect Your Hair This Summer
By Alecia Biggs

As we become more active to better our health, or simply as the temperature rises with the changing of the seasons, a dip in the pool is always refreshing. Before your next dive, as a swimmer, you should be well prepared for the prevention and treatment of chlorine exposure. Chlorine can be very drying on hair causing ends to split and texture to change. In order to prevent hair damage due to chlorine there are some steps you can follow with each swim.

STEP 1
Make sure before you jump into the pool, that you thoroughly wet the hair with un-chlorinated water. Hair is like a sponge and if it is full of un-chlorinated water it won't have room for the chlorine to penetrate the hair. You could also apply a sun protectant to your wet hair before entering the pool. Try using Color Extend Sun Solar Screen SPF 12. This will protect the hair from chlorine and sun while keeping it moisturized. Last but not least wear a swim cap. It is not the most attractive piece of head-wear, but if you are worried about the integrity of your hair, that is the route to go.

STEP 2
You need to rinse the hair thoroughly after a swim in chlorinated water. You can use club soda, which ceases the adverse effects of the chlorine. If you don't have club soda, rinse your hair with un-chlorinated water and shampoo with a clarifying shampoo such as Hair Cleansing Cream Shampoo by Redken. It will help to remove all the chlorine and mineral build-up on the hair strands.

STEP 3
Always finish your post swim regimen with a deep conditioning treatment on your hair. Try using Color Extend Sun After Sun Mask by Redken, not only does it have UV protection but it also has Mango oil to replenish the hairs natural oils. Leave a deep conditioner on your hair for 5 to 10 minutes to get thorough results.

STEP 4
Finish your summer by doing an In-salon clarifying treatment like the Pre- Art treatment by Redken. The treatment cost only 20 dollars and takes 15 minutes. The Pre- Art treatment strips the hair of all the chlorine and mineral build up, as well as product build up from your everyday routine. This treatment will leave your hair feeling soft, shiny, and chlorine free.

Daily Beauty Tip from Dolly Melissa

Daily Beauty Tip
By Melissa Rossi

Question: I've heard that washing you hair less is better? Is this true?

Melissa's Answer: I can't emphasize enough that if you invest in having you hair colored or highlighted the importance of washing your hair less frequently and using cooler water. Warm or hot water will open your hair cuticles and release the color that is trapped in your hair. Also, waiting at least a day (or more if you can stand it!) to wash your hair right after getting your color done will insure the longevity of the color applied to your hair.

Daily Beauty Tip from Dolly Danielle

Question: I have thinning hair and am wanting to color it. Will coloring my hair in this condition severely damage it?

Danielle's Answer: No! Coloring your hair actually expands the hair shaft making your hair appear thicker. Try to stay lighter and closer to your skin tone so that the contrast between your hair and scalp isn't too drastic.

Braids for Summer by Michelle

Daily Beauty Tip
"Braids for Summer"
By Michelle Zeller

Question: I'm trying to find a way to keep my bangs and shorter layers out of my face without using a headband. What would you suggest?

Answer: A single horizontal braid across the front of your hairline (forehead) is a quick and easy way to keep those pieces out of your face! Section your hair into a small horizontal section (going from one ear to another) and place the rest of your hair in a pony tail. Start behind your left ear, and french braid the small section closest to your forehead in the direction of your right ear. If you'd like to achieve a messier look, tease your hair before starting the braid. Once your braid has reached your right ear pin behind, and there you have it!
