As we become more active to better our health, or simply as the temperature rises with the changing of the seasons, a dip in the pool is always refreshing. Before your next dive, as a swimmer, you should be well prepared for the prevention and treatment of chlorine exposure. Chlorine can be very drying on hair causing ends to split and texture to change. In order to prevent hair damage due to chlorine there are some steps you can follow with each swim.
STEP 1
Make sure before you jump into the pool, that you thoroughly wet the hair with un-chlorinated water. Hair is like a sponge and if it is full of un-chlorinated water it won't have room for the chlorine to penetrate the hair. You could also apply a sun protectant to your wet hair before entering the pool. Try using Color Extend Sun Solar Screen SPF 12. This will protect the hair from chlorine and sun while keeping it moisturized. Last but not least wear a swim cap. It is not the most attractive piece of head-wear, but if you are worried about the integrity of your hair, that is the route to go.
STEP 2
You need to rinse the hair thoroughly after a swim in chlorinated water. You can use club soda, which ceases the adverse effects of the chlorine. If you don't have club soda, rinse your hair with un-chlorinated water and shampoo with a clarifying shampoo such as Hair Cleansing Cream Shampoo by Redken. It will help to remove all the chlorine and mineral build-up on the hair strands.
STEP 3
Always finish your post swim regimen with a deep conditioning treatment on your hair. Try using Color Extend Sun After Sun Mask by Redken, not only does it have UV protection but it also has Mango oil to replenish the hairs natural oils. Leave a deep conditioner on your hair for 5 to 10 minutes to get thorough results.
STEP 4
Finish your summer by doing an In-salon clarifying treatment like the Pre- Art treatment by Redken. The treatment cost only 20 dollars and takes 15 minutes. The Pre- Art treatment strips the hair of all the chlorine and mineral build up, as well as product build up from your everyday routine. This treatment will leave your hair feeling soft, shiny, and chlorine free.
